WARA Medicine
WARA Medicine brings together Swedish academia and the pharmaceutical industry to accelerate the use of transparent and explainable AI in medicine. The arena connects research with real industry needs across drug discovery, development, manufacturing, supply chains, and commercialization.
Through WARA Medicine, researchers and industry partners can collaborate on AI-driven methods that support better decisions across the pharmaceutical value chain. The goal is to help enable more effective treatments, faster development of new therapies, and improved outcomes for patients.
Objective
WARA Medicine focuses on transparent and explainable AI that can strengthen decision-making in pharmaceutical research and innovation. By connecting AI expertise with real-world pharmaceutical challenges, the arena supports research that can contribute to safer, faster, and more effective development of medicines.
Research Focus Areas
WARA Medicine advances AI and machine learning for the pharmaceutical development lifecycle, from early discovery to full-scale manufacturing. The research focuses on intelligent systems, large multimodal models, and other AI methods that support transparent and explainable decision-making.
Key initiatives include:
- Data sandboxes: Secure environments at AstraZeneca and Cytiva/Testa Center will allow academic researchers to develop and validate AI models using anonymized, real-world data.
- Multi-agent systems for decision-making: Develop AI-based assistants and collaborators that can support decisions across the pharmaceutical value chain.
- Integration of robotics, automation, and AI: Explore future laboratories and production environments where people, AI, and robotics work together.
- AI4Science: Improve predictions by combining machine learning with physics-informed neural networks, molecular dynamics simulations, and quantum mechanics.
- Analysis of high-dimensional data: Use methods such as foundation models to better analyze imaging and omics data.
- AI for Clinical and synthetic data: Optimizing the clinical trials of the future
- Real-time testing: Testa Center will provide access to a pilot-scale, industry-standard production environment for real-time model testing and verification.
- Research projects: Build a pipeline of industry-relevant projects, from PhD and postdoc initiatives to six-month graduate projects, that connect academic research with industry needs.
