WARA Medicine

Sweden’s leadership in the global pharmaceutical industry relies on a dynamic, world-class ecosystem driven by data-informed decision-making.

WARA Medicine serves as a collaborative platform where Swedish academia unite with the pharmaceutical industry to conduct pioneering research. The research arena will strengthen the entire pharmaceutical value chain, from drug discovery and development to manufacturing, supply chain optimization, and commercialization.

Objective of WARA Medicine

Our objective is to leverage transparent and explainable AI to enhance decision-making across the pharmaceutical value chain, potentially enabling more effective treatments, faster delivery of novel therapies, and improved patient outcomes.

Research Focus Areas

Operating at the intersection of medicine and Life Sciences in Sweden, WARA Medicine focuses on advancing the pharmaceutical development lifecycle—from early-stage discovery to full-scale manufacturing. Our research emphasizes the development of intelligent systems and agents powered by Large Multimodal Models and other AI/ML techniques, with a focus on transparency and explainability in decision-making support.

Key initiatives include:

  • Data Sandboxes: Secure, compliant environments at AstraZeneca and Cytiva/Testa Center will enable academic researchers to develop and validate AI models using anonymized, real-world data.
  • Multi-agentic systems for decision making: Enable virtual assistants and collaborators in the pharmaceutical value chain.
  • Integration of Robotics, Automation and AI: Create the future laboratory and production unit through combing humans, AI and robotics
  • AI4Science: Improve predictions through physics informed neural networks, combining ML and molecular dynamics simulations, combining ML and quantum mechanics
  • Analysis and exploitation of high dimensional data: Better exploit imaging and omics data through techniques like foundation models
  • AI for Clinical and synthetic data: Optimizing the clinical trials of the future
  • Real-Time Testing: Testa Center will provide access to a pilot-scale, industry-standard production environment for real-time model testing and verification.
  • Research projects: A pipeline of industry-relevant research projects, ranging from PhD and postdoc initiatives to 6-month graduate projects, to build a robust connection between academic research and industry needs.

Resources and partners

WARA Medicine brings leading industry partners, AstraZeneca, Cytiva, and Testa Center, together with researchers from WASP-affiliated universities. Our mission is to serve the needs of these partners, support academic excellence, and contribute to Swedish society by training the next generation of experts in pharmaceutical innovation and AI.

For PhD students

WARA Medicine is dedicated to educating the next generation of AI and ML researchers with a focus on pharmaceutical applications. We provide a supportive network and host a variety of activities, including:

  • Opportunities to execute research projects at a company using company data to validate developed ML/AI methods.
  • Research challenges and workshops
  • Project-based courses

These initiatives empower students and early-career researcher to gain practical experience and make meaningful contributions to the future of medicine.
