WASP industrial PhD student, Frida Norlund, received the “Young author award” for best conference contribution during the 4th IFAC Conference on Advances in Proportional-Integral-Derivative Control in Almeria, Spain.

“Our conference contribution, titled “Seamless PID-MPC Hybrid Control”, demonstrated how a seamless combination of two different control strategies, PID and MPC, can combine the desired properties of both controllers. Our working metaphor for the project has been ‘to get the best of both worlds’, and we demonstrate the principles in simulation for a process in the Aitik concentrator plant,” says Frida Norlund.

Frida joined WASP as an industrial PhD student with Boliden AB and the Department of Automatic Control at Lund University in the autumn of 2022, after graduating from the Engineering Physics program with a Master’s in Automatic Control. Her research focuses on the control of concentration processes for minerals and how their efficiency can be improved through better control and utilization of process data. She specifically collaborates with Boliden’s largest mine, Aitik.

How is it to be a part of WASP?
“Being a part of WASP not only finances my research, allowing me to have this job in the first place, but also gives me the opportunity to engage with a network of interesting people in neighbouring research fields. This broadens my knowledge in this fast-evolving research landscape. I believe being a part of WASP provides great opportunities for outlooks and collaborations, adding further value to my PhD studies.”
