WASP is very proud to have so many excellent researchers involved in the program. More than 450 researchers, reaching from assistant to senior professors, are affiliated with WASP. Some are international recruitments who have come to Sweden to join the WASP community, others are already well established in the Swedish academic system.

Through a series of portraits, you get the opportunity to get to know them a little bit better.

Meet Kary Främling

Kary Främling is a WASP Professor at the Department of Computing Science at Umeå University. Professor Främling was recruited by WASP in 2017.

What is your position/role in WASP?

WASP professor

Why did you choose to join WASP?

I have worked on autonomous systems, artificial intelligence and related technologies since the 1990’s, also applied to industrial settings. WASP was a great fit for that background.

What are the benefits you see in WASP?

A solid investment on autonomous systems and AI technologies in conjunction has a great potential to create new innovations for the benefit of Swedish industry.

Briefly describe your research topic.

My focus area in WASP is Explainable AI, including method development as well as applications in real-world settings.

In what way can your research be of importance to our society in the future?

Explainable AI methods are sometimes almost as hard to understand as the systems they are meant to explain. The produced explanations are also not really intended for the end-users, in the sense of citizens who are affected by decisions of AI systems. We intend to change that.
