We are proud to announce that WASP researcher Thomas Schön has been elected as a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (Kungl. Vetenskapsakademien). Thomas is part of several management groups at WASP, such as the Executive Committee (EXC) and the University Representative Group (URG).

“I am deeply honoured and sincerely grateful to receive this recognition. It serves as a strong source of motivation to continue contributing to the advancement of research and knowledge, which feels especially important in our world of today,” says Thomas Schön, WASP researcher at Uppsala University.

Thomas holds the Beijer Professorship in Artificial Intelligence at Uppsala University. With a background in automatic control, he has spent the past decade developing foundational and applied research, as well as education, in machine learning. His work focuses on creating algorithms and mathematical models that learn and act based on data. His interdisciplinary research group publishes across fields such as statistics, control theory, signal processing, and computer vision.

Thomas also collaborates with medical experts to apply AI in healthcare, including automated ECG and heart rhythm analysis. Most of the applied research is conducted in partnership with industry and other research teams.
