Jens Sjölund

WASP Assistant Professor, Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University

Meet Jens Sjölund, a WASP Assistant Professor in AI/MATH at Uppsala University, who uses machine learning to augment conventional methods. Sjölund was recruited by WASP in 2021.

What is your position/role in WASP?

WASP recruited Assistant Professor within AI/MATH.

Why did you choose to join WASP?

After having worked in industry for a few years I was eager to come back to academia and do cutting-edge research in machine learning and optimization.

What are the benefits you see in WASP?

WASP provides a fantastic network of potential collaborators in both industry and academia. And, of course, generous funding opportunities.

Briefly describe your research topic.

I am interested in using machine learning to augment conventional methods, primarily for solving large-scale optimization problems.

In what way can your research be of importance to our society in the future?

Large-scale optimization problems arise in tons of applications, e.g., in radiotherapy planning and medical imaging, where I used to work. Finding faster and/or better methods of solving these problems would have immediate benefits on both treatment and diagnosis.
