In recent years new mathematics has emerged, which is of great importance both for understanding and applications.
While the current success of AI in many application areas is undisputed, the mathematical understanding is far behind. Many aspects are poorly understood and there are more questions than solid answers. The hope of this cluster is to provide mathematical foundations for some aspects of AI. This will be achieved by a rather large number of small projects each aiming at understanding some particular aspect.
We will use methods from many parts of mathematics including information theory, mathematical statistics, optimization, numerical analysis, topology, combinatorics, graph theory, probability, complexity theory.
