Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever. WASP provides a platform for academic research and education, fostering interaction with Sweden’s leading technology companies. WASP has the ambition to strengthen and develop Sweden’s knowledge and competence in the areas of AI and machine learning through an international recruitment program. Thus the WASP positions are not intended as a mechanism to strengthen Sweden’s existing faculty, but to attract new talent to Sweden.

WASP will fund a total of six positions within machine learning, one position at each of the following universities; Chalmers University of Technology, Linköping University, Lund University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Umeå University and Örebro University. For further descriptions of positions and to apply, follow the links to the coordinating universities. Please note different final dates for applications.

To be eligible for funding the applicant must be qualified for an assistant, associate, or full professorship and prepared to start working at one of the six participating universities as listed above no later than 2020. WASP encourage applicants to be open with regards to if they have applied to the position at more than one of the WASP universities.

Machine learning is the discipline concerned with computer software that can learn autonomously. Machine learning, including both neural network-based approaches and mathematical statistics-based approaches, has become a driving force behind many recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence. From speech recognition, image analysis, natural language understanding, machine translation, question and answering systems, protein folding, and even playing GO, machine learning is breaking records. These exciting developments have not gone unnoticed to industry either; every major company now have large teams of researchers working with machine learning.

Evaluation process
Evaluations and selections of candidates are done by the hiring university using their normal procedures. Before sending the profiles of the selected candidates to the external experts, the WASP University representatives should confirm with WASP management that candidates meet the standards for WASP funding. In addition, there will be a final check that the final selected candidate meets the standards as described above before a final decision from WASP is sent to the hiring university.

Assessment criteria for candidates include:

Research excellence proved by scientific publications in machine learning
International research experience
Potential to strengthen basic research in machine learning in Sweden
Relevant pedagogical skills and training
Capability to collaborate with academic and industrial partners

Timeline
2019-05-23 – Decision by the WASP Board to initiate the recruitment processes at the universities: Chalmers, KTH, LiU, Lund, UmU and ÖU.
2019-09-01 – Joint WASP announcement of the open positions.
2019-09-01 and forward – Evaluations and selections of candidates by the hiring universities using their normal procedures. There will be a final check that the final selected candidate meets the standards as described above before a final decision from WASP is sent to the hiring university.
