SUMMARY:WASP4ALL 2022 - Software Powering the Digital Future
DESCRIPTION:Software is the intellectual fuel of modern society and is pervasive in our daily life. It is a key technology in all disciplines and domains. Major advances in software research and development are taking place in industry and academia alike. The interplay and transfer of knowledge between the two sectors is fundamental to the acceleration of digitalization. \nWASP invites researchers from academia and industry to participate in the virtual conference WASP4ALL 2022 on May 30th. Here leading international software researchers from academia and industry will discuss state-of-the-art and share recent findings and experiences. We will also have in-depth discussions on how to improve the knowledge exchange between industry and software research across disciplines. \nRegistration is closed.

SUMMARY:WARA Media and Language webinar: Probabilistic locomotion animation with normalising flows
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to this webinar arranged by WARA Media and Language where Gustav Eje Henter\, WASP assistant professor at the Division of Speech\, Music and Hearing at KTH Royal Institute of Technology\, will talk about MoGlow\, a new\, award-winning deep-learning architecture that leverages normalising flows. \nIf you wish to attend\, please register using the link below. \nAbstract\nData-driven character animation holds great promise for enhancing realism and creativity in games\, film\, virtual avatars and social robots. However\, due to the high bar on visual quality\, most existing AI animation solutions focus narrowly on a specific task\, and do not generalise to different motion types. \nThis talk makes the case that 1) machine learning now has advanced far enough that strong\, task-agnostic motion models are possible\, and that 2) these models should be probabilistic in nature\, to accommodate the great diversity in how behaviours can be realised. We present MoGlow\, a new\, award-winning deep-learning architecture that leverages normalising flows and satisfies our two desired criteria. Experiments show that MoGlow is competitive with the state-of-the-art in locomotion generation for both humans and dogs. \nFor a longer introduction showing our models in action\, please see the following video: MoGlow: Probabilistic and controllable motion synthesis using normalising flows \nBio Gustav Eje Henter\nGustav Eje Henter is a WASP assistant professor in machine learning at the Division of Speech\, Music and Hearing at KTH. His main research interests are probabilistic modelling and deep learning for data-generation tasks\, especially speech and motion/animation synthesis. \nHe has an MSc and a PhD from KTH\, followed by post-docs in speech synthesis at the Centre for Speech Technology Research at the University of Edinburgh\, UK\, and in Prof. Junichi Yamagishi’s lab at the National Institute of Informatics\, Tokyo\, Japan\, before returning to KTH in 2018.

SUMMARY:WARA Media and Language webinar: Developing and evaluating data-driven models for co-speech gesture-synthesis
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to this webinar arranged by WARA Media and Language where Taras Kucherenko\, Research Scientist at EA Games\, will talk about generation and evaluation of co-speech gestures for embodied conversational agents using deep learning. \nIf you wish to attend\, please register using the link below. \nAbstract\nHumans use non-verbal behaviors to signal their intent\, emotions\, and attitudes in human-human interactions. Embodied conversational agents (ECA)\, therefore\, need this ability as well in order to make interaction pleasant and efficient. An essential part of non-verbal communication is gesticulation. The task of hand gesture generation has been initially approached mainly by rule-based methods\, but current state-of-the-art methods are data-driven\, and we continue this line of research. In this talk\, I will present my work addressing the two components of my thesis: generation and evaluation of co-speech gestures for embodied conversational agents using deep learning. \nBio Taras Kucherenko\nTaras Kucherenko is currently a Research Scientist at EA Games. Recently he finished a Ph.D. at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. His research is on machine learning models for non-verbal behavior generation\, such as hand gestures and facial expressions. For his research papers\, he received ICMI 2020 Best Paper Award and IVA 2020 Best Paper Award. Taras was also the main organizer of The GENEA (Generation and Evaluation of Non-verbal Behavior for Embodied Agents) Workshop both in 2020 and in 2021.
